Theories

John Bowlby (1907 – 1990) and the Attachment theory

Main ideas: Human beings are born with the need to connect emotionally with other people. We don’t learn to love – we are programmed to seek closeness with our friends and family. In other words, our emotional need for connection is even stronger than our biological need for nutrition Bowlby believed that patterns established in childhood have an important impact on later relationships. Why should you read this? This theory will help you understand that even very young children have established attitude towards the lack of love and attention. It gives a specific explanation of how to interact with our kids in order to create a secure relationship with them. By secure relationship we mean one that will help children feel protected and have healthy relations with their partners further in life.

Sigmund Freud (1856- 1939) and his revolutionary theory

Main Ideas: Our personality develops as we move through a series of psychosexual stages. Each stage is characterized by different demands for sexual gratification and different ways of achieving that gratification. Why should you read this? Most parents believe that good academic and cultural education can guaranty their kid’s successful life. Step by step in children development

Although each child is unique, there are some components of the physical, social, sexual and cognitive development that appear throughout the first 10 years of all the kids. The gender, the socio-econimical status and all the other characteristics of the child's figure are also under the influence of those components and not the opposite. That's why it is important for the parents to familiarise themselves with the major periods of their childrens' development.

Jean Piaget (1986 – 1980) and the Constructivist Theory

Information (knowledge) cannot be transferred from one person to another (from parents to children); it must be ‘constructed’ throughout experience. This experience allows children to create schemes (mental models) that can be enlarged and improved by assimilation (transform the situation in order to make it easier for examination) and accommodation (transform personal actions in order to adapt them to the situation).

Lev Vigotsky (1896- 1934) The Socio-Cultural Perspective

Main ideas: There is a gap between child’s capacity to execute given task (level of actual development) and its capacity to do so with the help of an adult. If two kids have the same level of actual development (measured by their IQ score) the one that has benefited from appropriate adult help will be able to solve much better any given problem. Vigotsky also believes that an individual’s development is a result of her or his culture. Why should you read this? Vigotsky describes the best ways to interact with kids so they can benefit the most from your help. The theory focuses on factors such as language, play and peer interaction, saying that each of them is vital for the development of your child and can be improved with the appropriate care and attention. Vigotsky’s theory will make you understand that your child’s potential will go as far as you push it with all your efforts and love.

Maria Montessori (1870- 1952) and her modern method of teaching

Main ideas: The Montessori Method is an educational technique for children (mainly in preschool and elementary school) based on the idea that education should be adapted to each child’s needs and capacities. Kids spend their time in well equipped areas where they learn from real situations and not from books. The method studies disciplines such as mathematics, literature, physics and many more. Why should you read this? The Montessori Method has become extremely popular in many countries such as France, the UK, the USA etc. Its followers believe that with the right attitude and attention you can extend the potential of your child without depriving him of fun time during childhood. You’ll find out how to explain difficult problems with simple objects in order to make it easier for your child to understand the surrounding world.
